Product Details

Acherontia atropos females lay single eggs under the leaves of host plants, usually nightshades like potatoes. After hatching, the larvae are voracious and stubborn; if harassed, they will snap their mandibles loudly or even bite. A horn on the posterior of early instars might contribute to their threatening appearance.

Caterpillars change color as they age, and in their final larval form, they can be yellow, green, or tan. They can accumulate the toxins of their host plants, which may protect them against predators.

When the time is right, caterpillars dig 8 to 10 inches (20-25 cm) underground and create a chamber in which to pupate. In colder climates, pupae may overwinter.

Measures 2.25" across. Double-posted, soft enamel + epoxy.
