These common biting horse flies are often called "greenheads" - or worse! Their bite is especially painful compared to that of a mosquito because the fly’s mouthparts function like crude scissors, cutting into the skin so the fly can suck up the pooling blood. Unlike mosquitoes and ticks, they do not release anesthetic with their bites.
This striped horse fly (Tabanus lineola) pin depicts the beautiful female with her striped neon eyes - and she won't bite! Soft enamel, double posted. Measures approximately 1" across.
